LiFePO4 Batteries for Golf Carts and Utility Vehicles

A golf cart battery must maintain stable voltage, supply the motor controller’s peak current and provide sufficient energy for the required driving range.

The correct configuration depends on the vehicle voltage, motor power, controller current, passenger or cargo load, terrain, operating schedule and available battery space.

Typical applications include:

  • Personal golf carts
  • Golf course fleet vehicles
  • Light-duty utility vehicles
  • Neighborhood electric vehicles
  • Resort and hotel transportation
  • Commercial rental fleets
  • Campus and facility vehicles
  • Custom low-speed electric vehicles

24V, 36V and 48V Golf Cart Batteries

The replacement battery must match the nominal voltage of the vehicle’s motor controller unless the complete drive system is being redesigned.

24V Golf Cart and Utility Vehicle Batteries

24V and 25.6V LiFePO4 batteries are available for compact golf carts, light-duty utility vehicles and low-speed electric equipment.

Capacity and discharge current are selected according to the motor, controller, vehicle load and required operating range.

36V Golf Cart LiFePO4 Batteries

36V and 38.4V LiFePO4 battery systems can replace compatible lead-acid battery banks in golf carts and utility vehicles.

A single integrated lithium battery reduces the number of inter-battery cables and connection points used in a conventional multi-battery lead-acid bank.

48V Golf Cart LiFePO4 Batteries

48V and 51.2V LiFePO4 batteries are available for modern golf carts, utility vehicles and commercial fleets requiring dependable output and longer operating time.

Battery capacity, BMS current rating and enclosure design are matched to the motor controller, battery compartment and intended vehicle use.

Golf Cart Battery Capacity and Driving Range

Battery capacity should be selected from the vehicle’s actual energy consumption and the required driving range, rather than amp-hour capacity alone.

A battery sizing review should include:

  • Vehicle system voltage
  • Motor power
  • Controller continuous and peak current
  • Required driving range
  • Passenger or cargo load
  • Flat or hilly terrain
  • Average operating speed
  • Regenerative braking current, where applicable
  • Battery-compartment dimensions

Vehicle weight, speed, terrain, tire condition, temperature and driving pattern all affect energy consumption and real-world range.

Custom Golf Cart Battery Configuration

Each battery is developed around the electrical, mechanical and operating requirements of the golf cart or utility vehicle.

Electrical Requirements

  • 24V, 36V or 48V system voltage
  • Required battery capacity
  • Continuous and peak discharge current
  • Motor-controller specifications
  • Charging voltage and current
  • Regenerative charging current, where applicable
  • Auxiliary 12V equipment requirements

Mechanical Requirements

  • Battery-compartment dimensions
  • Enclosure dimensions and material
  • Mounting brackets and fixing points
  • Terminal positions
  • Main power connector
  • Charging and communication connectors
  • Lifting points and service access

Vehicle System Integration

  • Motor and controller compatibility
  • Lithium battery charger matching
  • State-of-charge display
  • Ignition or key-switch connection
  • CAN or RS485 communication where required
  • DC-DC converter requirements

High-Current Smart BMS

The Smart BMS must support normal driving current and short periods of higher current during acceleration, hill climbing or heavy-load operation.

Available BMS functions can include:

  • Overcharge and over-discharge protection
  • Continuous and peak-current protection
  • Short-circuit protection
  • High- and low-temperature protection
  • Cell-voltage monitoring and balancing
  • State-of-charge reporting
  • Bluetooth battery monitoring
  • CAN or RS485 communication

If the vehicle uses regenerative braking, the cells, BMS and controller settings must accept the expected regenerative charging current.

Communication compatibility depends on the BMS, vehicle controller, protocol, firmware and cable configuration. These requirements must be confirmed before sample production.

Golf Cart Charger and Controller Compatibility

The battery, motor controller and charger should be reviewed together before the final specification is approved.

The compatibility review should confirm:

  • Vehicle and battery voltage
  • Controller continuous and peak current
  • Correct charging voltage
  • Maximum charging current
  • Lithium-compatible charging profile
  • Charger connector and cable layout
  • Control communication where required
  • Low-temperature charging restrictions

An existing lead-acid charger should only be retained when its charging voltage, current and operating profile are confirmed as suitable for the new LiFePO4 battery. Otherwise, a matched lithium battery charger should be used.

Lead-Acid to LiFePO4 Golf Cart Conversion

Replacing golf cart lead-acid batteries with LiFePO4 involves more than removing the original battery bank. The motor controller, charger, cables, connectors, mounting structure and state-of-charge display should also be checked.

A conversion review can include:

  • Original battery-bank voltage
  • Battery-compartment dimensions
  • Vehicle weight distribution
  • Motor and controller current
  • Main power cables and terminals
  • Fuse and disconnect requirements
  • Lithium charger selection
  • Battery mounting and movement protection

Golf Cart LiFePO4 Battery FAQ

What voltage battery does a golf cart use?

Golf carts commonly use 36V or 48V battery systems. Selected compact golf carts and light-duty utility vehicles use 24V batteries. The battery voltage must match the motor controller and vehicle electrical system.

How is golf cart battery capacity selected?

Capacity is selected according to the required driving range, motor power, controller current, vehicle load, terrain, operating speed and available installation space.

Can a lead-acid golf cart be converted to LiFePO4?

Yes. The battery voltage, controller current, charger, cables, connectors, mounting structure and state-of-charge display should all be reviewed before conversion.

Can the original lead-acid charger be retained?

Only when its voltage, current and charging profile are suitable for the new LiFePO4 battery. A matched lithium battery charger is generally recommended.

How long does a golf cart LiFePO4 battery last?

Service life depends on battery design, depth of discharge, charging method, temperature and operating conditions. The cycle-life specification should be confirmed for the selected battery model.

Do golf cart batteries support Bluetooth monitoring?

Selected configurations support Bluetooth monitoring for battery voltage, current, state of charge, temperature and alarm information.

Can golf cart batteries support CAN or RS485 communication?

Selected configurations support CAN or RS485 communication when a compatible protocol is available for the vehicle controller or connected equipment.
