Lead-Acid to LiFePO4 Battery Replacement

Can LiFePO4 batteries replace lead-acid batteries?

Yes, in many applications. However, a LiFePO4 battery should not be selected only by matching the nominal voltage.

The following requirements should be reviewed before replacement:

  • Required battery capacity
  • Continuous and peak current
  • Battery compartment dimensions
  • Terminal position and cable arrangement
  • Charger and alternator compatibility
  • Inverter or motor-controller requirements
  • Fuse and cable ratings
  • Low-temperature charging conditions
  • Series or parallel connection requirements

What are the advantages of replacing lead-acid batteries with LiFePO4?

A correctly configured LiFePO4 replacement can provide more usable capacity, lower weight, more stable voltage under load and faster charging when suitable charging equipment is used.

LiFePO4 batteries also include BMS protection and do not require routine water maintenance.

Can Group 24, Group 27 or Group 31 batteries be replaced?

Selected LiFePO4 batteries can use dimensions similar to common Group 24, Group 27 or Group 31 lead-acid batteries.

The enclosure dimensions, terminal positions, mounting method and available installation space must be confirmed before replacement. A battery should only be identified by a BCI group size when its dimensions meet the applicable requirements.

Can an existing lead-acid charger charge a LiFePO4 battery?

Only when the charger’s voltage, charging profile and current limits are suitable for the approved LiFePO4 battery configuration.

Chargers with equalization or unsuitable high-voltage charging stages may not be appropriate. Charger compatibility should be confirmed before installation.

Can LiFePO4 batteries be connected in series or parallel?

Selected battery models support approved series or parallel connections. The permitted number of batteries, cable arrangement and commissioning procedure depend on the battery model and Smart BMS.

Batteries should not be connected in series or parallel unless the manufacturer has approved the configuration.

Smart BMS and Battery Communication

What protection does a Smart BMS provide?

Depending on the battery model and BMS configuration, protection functions can include:

  • Overcharge protection
  • Over-discharge protection
  • Overcurrent protection
  • Short-circuit protection
  • High-temperature protection
  • Low-temperature charging protection

The applicable protection limits are set according to the battery configuration and operating requirements.

Are Bluetooth, CAN and RS485 available?

Bluetooth monitoring, CAN communication and RS485 communication are available on selected battery configurations.

Availability depends on the Smart BMS, communication protocol and connected equipment.

Can LiFePO4 batteries communicate with an inverter or controller?

Selected battery systems can communicate with compatible inverters, motor controllers, displays or energy-management equipment through CAN or RS485.

The equipment model, connector, firmware and communication protocol must be confirmed before sample development or production. A matching connector does not by itself confirm protocol compatibility.

What information is needed for communication integration?

Please provide the connected equipment model, required communication protocol, connector details, available protocol documentation and required battery data.

Communication testing can be completed during sample development when the necessary equipment and protocol information are available.

Samples, MOQ and Production

What is the MOQ for OEM battery orders?

MOQ depends on the battery model, voltage, capacity, enclosure and customization requirements. Standard products and custom battery projects may have different minimum quantities.

The applicable MOQ is confirmed after the project requirements have been reviewed.

Can samples be supplied before volume production?

Yes. Standard or custom samples can be supplied after the technical specifications and commercial terms are confirmed.

Sample testing should be completed with the intended charger, inverter, controller or equipment before volume production is approved.

What is the production lead time?

Production lead time depends on the battery configuration, component availability, customization requirements, testing process and order quantity.

The sample and production schedule is confirmed with each quotation.

How are batteries tested before shipment?

Testing requirements depend on the battery specification and project. Quality checks can include cell inspection, assembly inspection, BMS protection verification, capacity testing, charge and discharge testing, communication testing and final appearance inspection.

Battery Certifications and Documents

What battery certifications and documents are available?

Document availability depends on the exact battery model, application, shipping method and destination market.

Available documents may include:

  • UN38.3 lithium battery transport test reports
  • MSDS or safety data documentation
  • CE documentation for qualified battery models
  • RoHS documentation for qualified battery models
  • Product-specific test reports
  • Battery specifications and technical datasheets
  • Packaging and transportation documents

Does one certification report cover every customized battery?

No. A report issued for one voltage, capacity, cell configuration, BMS or enclosure may not apply to a modified battery.

Certification and document availability must be confirmed for the exact battery configuration.
