Marine Battery Project Requirements

The battery needed to fit the available compartment, support the vessel’s electrical loads and work with the approved charging equipment.

The project review covered:

  • Required battery voltage and usable capacity
  • Continuous and peak discharge current
  • Battery compartment dimensions and mounting points
  • Marine inverter and charger compatibility
  • Terminal, cable and connector layout
  • Smart BMS protection and monitoring
  • Bluetooth, CAN or RS485 requirements
  • OEM branding, labeling and packaging

Custom Marine Battery Design

The enclosure, terminal positions and electrical configuration were developed around the vessel installation layout. Mounting, cable routing, service access and protection from the operating environment were reviewed before the design was approved.

Available engineering options included:

  • Custom battery voltage and capacity
  • Application-specific continuous and peak current
  • Custom metal or plastic enclosure
  • Equipment-specific terminals and connectors
  • Low-temperature charging protection
  • Optional self-heating for suitable configurations
  • Custom cables and wiring harnesses

Marine Electrical System Integration

The battery system was designed for integration with the vessel’s inverter, shore charger, solar charge controller, fuse protection, isolation switch and DC distribution system.

The integration review included:

  • Battery and inverter voltage compatibility
  • Shore charger voltage and charging profile
  • Solar charge controller settings
  • Alternator or DC-DC charging requirements where applicable
  • Main fuse and battery isolation
  • Marine-grade cable size and terminal protection
  • Positive and negative busbar connections

An existing charger or inverter can only be retained when its voltage, current limits and operating settings are suitable for the approved LiFePO4 battery specification.

Smart BMS and Marine Communication

The Smart BMS settings were configured according to the selected cells, load current, charging equipment and operating conditions. Protection can include overcharge, over-discharge, overcurrent, short circuit and temperature limits.

Bluetooth monitoring, CAN or RS485 communication can be included when required and supported by compatible equipment. The BMS protocol, firmware, communication cable and connector pinout must be confirmed before sample development.

Prototype Testing and Validation

The prototype battery was inspected and tested against the approved electrical, mechanical and communication requirements before production approval.

Testing can include:

  • Battery capacity and charge-discharge performance
  • Continuous and peak-current verification
  • Smart BMS protection testing
  • Bluetooth, CAN or RS485 testing where required
  • Charger and inverter compatibility checks
  • Terminal, cable and connector inspection
  • Aging and final functional testing

Custom Marine Battery Project FAQ

Can the enclosure be matched to an existing boat battery compartment?

Yes. Enclosure dimensions, mounting points, terminal positions, cable outlets and service access can be configured for qualified OEM projects.

Can the battery work with the vessel’s existing charger and inverter?

They may be retained if their voltage, charging profile, current limits and operating settings are suitable for the proposed battery and Smart BMS.

Can a marine battery support CAN or RS485 communication?

Selected battery configurations support CAN or RS485 communication. Compatibility depends on the BMS, connected marine equipment, protocol, firmware and cable pinout.

Can self-heating be added for cold-weather operation?

Self-heating and low-temperature charging protection are available options for suitable configurations. The required functions depend on the operating and charging conditions.
