Project Overview

Application RV / Motorhome Electrical System
Customer Type RV Manufacturer / System Integrator
Project Type Custom LiFePO4 OEM Integration
Engineering Focus Fitment, BMS, Charging & Communication
Validation Electrical, Mechanical & BMS Checks
OEM Scope Sample Development & Private Label

RV Battery Project Requirements

The customer required a compact LiFePO4 battery configuration that could fit the available RV battery space and operate with the onboard inverter, charger and DC electrical equipment.

The initial engineering review covered:

  • Required battery voltage and usable capacity
  • Continuous and peak discharge-current requirements
  • Existing battery-compartment dimensions
  • Inverter and charger electrical requirements
  • Terminal, cable and connector positions
  • Smart BMS protection and monitoring requirements
  • Communication requirements where connected equipment required battery data
  • Low-temperature operation requirements where applicable
  • Private-label and packaging requirements

The battery was therefore treated as one part of the complete RV electrical system rather than as a standalone voltage-and-Ah replacement.

Custom RV Battery Design

The enclosure, terminal layout and electrical configuration were developed around the RV installation space and power-system requirements. Cable routes, mounting points and service access were reviewed before the mechanical configuration was approved.

The project configuration was selected from the application requirements rather than forcing the RV to accept a generic catalogue battery.

Engineering options for qualified RV OEM projects can include:

  • Custom battery voltage and capacity
  • Custom metal or plastic enclosure
  • Application-specific continuous and peak-current capability
  • Custom terminals, connectors and cables
  • Project-specific mounting and service access
  • Low-temperature charging protection
  • Optional self-heating for suitable cold-weather applications

Smart BMS & RV System Communication

Smart BMS settings were reviewed according to the selected battery configuration, current requirements, charging system and expected operating conditions.

Bluetooth monitoring, CAN or RS485 communication can be included when required by connected equipment and supported by a compatible protocol. Matching the physical communication interface alone does not confirm system compatibility.

Where communication is required, the integration review can include:

  • BMS communication protocol
  • CAN or RS485 interface
  • Connector and cable pinout
  • Baud rate and addressing where applicable
  • Battery SOC, voltage, current and temperature reporting
  • Charge and discharge limits required by connected equipment
  • Inverter, charger or system-controller compatibility

RV Charging-System Compatibility

The RV charger, inverter and other charging sources were reviewed against the battery voltage, permitted charging current and Smart BMS limits. Existing charging equipment should only be retained when its output and charging behavior are suitable for the approved LiFePO4 battery configuration.

The system review can include:

  • AC charger or inverter-charger voltage and charging profile
  • Solar charge-controller settings
  • Alternator or DC-DC charging requirements
  • Combined charging current from multiple sources
  • Inverter continuous and surge demand
  • Battery BMS charge and discharge limits
  • Cable size, cable length and terminal ratings
  • Fuse, breaker and battery-isolation requirements

Sample Testing & Validation

Sample batteries were inspected and tested against the approved electrical, mechanical and communication requirements before production approval.

The applicable validation scope included:

  • Battery capacity and charge-discharge performance
  • Continuous and peak-current verification
  • Smart BMS protection testing
  • Bluetooth, CAN or RS485 checks where required
  • Charger and inverter compatibility checks
  • Terminal, cable and connector inspection
  • Mechanical fitment and service-access review
  • Aging and final functional testing

Project Outcome & RV System Integration

The project moved from requirement confirmation through custom battery configuration and sample validation, with the battery specification defined around the RV installation space, current demand, charging equipment, Smart BMS protection and communication requirements.

This system-level approach provides a controlled specification for OEM production instead of relying on a generic battery selected only by nominal voltage and Ah capacity.

Custom RV Battery Project FAQ

Can the battery enclosure be matched to an existing RV compartment?

Yes. Enclosure dimensions, mounting points, terminal positions, cable outlets and service access can be configured for qualified OEM projects.

Can the battery communicate with the RV inverter or charger?

Selected configurations can support CAN or RS485 communication. Compatibility depends on the BMS, connected equipment, communication protocol, firmware, wiring and cable pinout.

Does having a CAN connection automatically confirm compatibility?

No. CAN is the communication channel. The BMS and connected equipment must also support the required protocol, pinout, settings and battery data.

Can self-heating be added for winter RV operation?

Self-heating and low-temperature charging protection are available options for suitable battery configurations. The required function depends on the approved operating and charging conditions.

Can a sample be tested before volume production?

Yes. A prototype can be developed after the electrical, mechanical and communication requirements are confirmed, and the applicable sample results can be reviewed before the production specification is approved.

What information is required for an RV OEM battery project?

Provide the system voltage, required capacity, continuous and peak current, battery-compartment dimensions, inverter and charger models, DC-DC charging information, operating temperature, communication requirements and estimated order quantity.
