Custom RV LiFePO4 Battery OEM Project

This custom RV battery project was developed for integration into an RV manufacturer’s existing electrical system. The battery dimensions, capacity, discharge current, Smart BMS protection, charging compatibility and communication requirements were confirmed before sample production.

The project covered battery specification, enclosure development, system integration, sample testing and private-label manufacturing.

RV Battery Project Requirements

The customer required a compact LiFePO4 battery that could fit the existing battery compartment and work with the onboard inverter, charger and DC equipment.

The initial review covered:

  • Required battery voltage and capacity
  • Continuous and peak discharge current
  • Existing battery compartment dimensions
  • Inverter and charger compatibility
  • Terminal, cable and connector positions
  • Smart BMS protection and monitoring
  • Private-label and packaging requirements

Custom RV Battery Design

The enclosure, terminal layout and electrical configuration were developed around the RV installation space and power-system requirements. Cable routes, mounting points and service access were reviewed before the mechanical design was approved.

The final configuration was selected from the project requirements rather than a standard catalogue model. Available engineering options included:

  • Custom battery voltage and capacity
  • Custom metal or plastic enclosure
  • Application-specific discharge current
  • Custom terminals, connectors and cables
  • Low-temperature charging protection
  • Optional self-heating for cold-weather operation

Smart BMS and RV System Communication

The Smart BMS settings were configured according to the selected cells, battery current, charging system and expected operating conditions.

Bluetooth monitoring, CAN or RS485 communication can be included when required by the connected equipment and supported by a compatible protocol. The inverter, charger, communication cable and connector pinout must be confirmed before sample development.

Charging-System Compatibility

The RV charger, inverter and other charging sources were reviewed against the battery voltage, permitted charging current and BMS limits. An existing charger can only be retained when its charging profile is suitable for the approved LiFePO4 battery specification.

The system review can include:

  • AC charger voltage and charging profile
  • Solar charge controller settings
  • Alternator or DC-DC charging requirements
  • Inverter power and peak battery current
  • Cable size and terminal ratings
  • Fuse rating and battery isolation

Sample Testing and Validation

Sample batteries were inspected and tested against the approved electrical, mechanical and communication requirements before production approval.

Testing included:

  • Battery capacity and charge-discharge performance
  • Continuous and peak-current verification
  • Smart BMS protection testing
  • Bluetooth, CAN or RS485 testing where required
  • Charger and inverter compatibility checks
  • Terminal, cable and connector inspection
  • Aging and final functional testing

Can the battery communicate with the RV inverter or charger?

Selected battery configurations support CAN or RS485 communication. Compatibility depends on the BMS, connected equipment, protocol, firmware and cable pinout.

Can self-heating be added for winter operation?

Self-heating and low-temperature charging protection are available options for suitable battery configurations. The required function depends on the operating temperature and charging conditions.

Can a sample be tested before volume production?

Yes. A prototype can be developed after the electrical, mechanical and communication requirements are confirmed. Sample results are reviewed before the production specification is approved.
