LiFePO4 Battery Specifications and Datasheets

A battery datasheet provides the electrical, mechanical and operating information needed to evaluate a battery for a particular application.

Available product information may include:

  • Nominal voltage and rated capacity
  • Stored energy in watt-hours
  • Battery dimensions and weight
  • Continuous and peak discharge current
  • Maximum charging current
  • Terminal position and configuration
  • Smart BMS specifications
  • Recommended charging parameters
  • Operating and storage temperatures
  • Series or parallel connection limits

Specifications must be confirmed for the exact battery model. Values from a different voltage, capacity, enclosure or BMS configuration may not apply to a modified battery.

Lead-Acid to LiFePO4 Battery Replacement

Replacing a lead-acid battery involves more than selecting a LiFePO4 battery with the same nominal voltage. Battery dimensions, terminal positions, maximum current and charging equipment must also be reviewed.

A replacement assessment should include:

  • 12V, 24V, 36V or 48V system voltage
  • Required capacity and usable energy
  • Continuous and peak discharge current
  • Battery compartment dimensions
  • Terminal position and cable arrangement
  • Charger and alternator compatibility
  • Inverter or motor-controller requirements
  • Fuse and cable ratings
  • Low-temperature charging protection
  • Approved series or parallel connections

Common lead-acid replacement formats can include Group 24, Group 27 and Group 31 batteries. The actual enclosure dimensions and terminal layout must be checked before a battery is identified as a compatible replacement.

Battery Installation and System Integration

Correct installation depends on battery voltage, maximum current, mounting position, charging equipment and operating environment. The complete electrical system should be reviewed before installing a new LiFePO4 battery bank.

Installation guidance can cover:

  • Battery mounting and service access
  • Cable and connector selection
  • Fuse and battery-isolation sizing
  • Charger and inverter compatibility
  • Alternator and DC-DC charging
  • Solar charge controller settings
  • Series and parallel battery connections
  • Terminal and cable protection
  • Low-temperature charging protection
  • System startup and routine inspection

Installation requirements depend on the battery model and connected equipment. The instructions supplied with the approved battery configuration should be followed.

Smart BMS, CAN and RS485 Communication

Selected LiFePO4 battery systems can support Bluetooth monitoring, CAN communication and RS485 communication. Available functions depend on the battery model, Smart BMS protocol and connected equipment.

Engineering support can include:

  • Smart BMS protection settings
  • Battery voltage and temperature monitoring
  • State-of-charge reporting
  • Bluetooth battery monitoring
  • CAN communication protocols
  • RS485 communication protocols
  • Inverter, charger or controller matching
  • Communication cable configuration
  • Protocol and equipment testing

The inverter, charger, motor controller or equipment model should be provided before ordering. Matching the physical communication connector does not by itself confirm protocol compatibility.

LiFePO4 Battery Certifications and Test Reports

Battery safety, transport and compliance documents vary by model, battery configuration and destination market.

Available documents may include:

  • UN38.3 lithium battery transport test reports
  • MSDS or safety data documentation
  • CE documentation for qualified battery models
  • RoHS documentation for qualified battery models
  • IEC reports where applicable
  • Product-specific test reports
  • Battery specifications and technical datasheets
  • Packaging and transportation documents

Certification should be confirmed for the exact battery model. A report issued for one voltage, capacity, cell configuration or enclosure may not apply to a modified product.

LiFePO4 Battery Resource FAQ

How can I request a battery datasheet?

Provide the battery model, voltage, capacity and application. For a custom project, also include the required current, installation dimensions and order quantity.

Do all batteries use the same charging parameters?

No. Charging voltage and current limits depend on the battery configuration and Smart BMS settings. Use the parameters supplied for the approved battery model.

Can an existing lead-acid charger be used with LiFePO4 batteries?

Only when its charging profile, voltage and current limits are suitable for the LiFePO4 battery. Charger compatibility should be confirmed before installation.

Do all LiFePO4 batteries support CAN or RS485?

No. CAN and RS485 are available on selected battery configurations. The required protocol and connected equipment must be confirmed before production.

Can certification documents be used for a customized battery?

Not automatically. Changes to voltage, capacity, cells, Smart BMS or enclosure may affect document applicability. Certification must be confirmed for the exact battery configuration.
